Life is much slower in the tropics. It’s hot and humid and somehow instantly relaxing. Even if you wanted to run at your normal pace of life, you would find that you cannot and what is more you do not want to.

The day starts early as the sun comes up every day at 6:00 am and it ends early also at about 6:00 pm. For many of the locals, the hours in between are spent “going slow.” This is true sitting, chatting to neighbors and relaxing. Even when at work they seem to do it with a laid back air.

They pass one another in the street with the greeting “Go Slow!”

They accept where they are at. They don’t expect to be able to do more than they can. They don’t expect to get anywhere sooner than they can get there. If it doesn’t happen today then there is always tomorrow. They are in the present moment accepting the tropical heat and flowing along with it.

We spend so much of our lives rushing around meeting what we think are important deadlines and achieving what we believe to be important goals. When we focus on these future achievements and destinations we are not accepting the present moment.

Next time you find yourself in a hurry remember to “GO SLOW.”
